On September 9, Ken and I are getting off the couch and hitting the pavement to run (I use that word loosely) a 5k in support of Prostate Cancer Research! We won't ask you to get up early that morning to join us but please consider supporting the cause through a donation.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer to affect Canadian men. In fact, during his lifetime, one in seven men will be diagnosed with the disease. In 2016, an estimated 4100 men died from prostate cancer.
The good news is that, when detected early, prostate cancer is over 90% treatable. Prostate Cancer Canada recommends that men in their 40s get a PSA test in order to establish their baseline.
Prostate Cancer Canada’s goals are twofold – to support research to uncover better diagnostic and treatment options and to provide comprehensive support services for those living with prostate cancer. The funds raised through the B&O Yorkville Run will help support the Prostate Cancer Canada Graduate Studentship in Prostate Cancer Research awards in Toronto.
Started in 2014, Graduate Studentship awards provide stipends for outstanding Canadian graduate and postdoctoral students studying prostate cancer. The program aims to support high potential trainees to develop their skills in conducting prostate cancer research. The expectation is that following this period of research and training, award recipients will continue their research careers in prostate cancer. These up and coming minds are definitely the ‘ones to watch’ in prostate cancer research!
